We cast the net wide to find a car that can beat the Cayman GTS The Porsche 718 Cayman GTS is such a complete car that we decided to launch a pincer-attack on it from two different directions. There’s the ‘honey I shrunk the supercar’ Lotus Exige as well as the sophisticated and much cheaper (in the real world) Audi TT RS. There’s quite a spread of talent and quite a spread on cost too. One of these cars could in theory be yours for £50,000 while one costs in reality over £100,000. The cheapest car here, which could be £50k but is £61k with some fun extras, is Audi’s TT RS. On its own it feels extremely capable, with that delightful turbocharged engine adding its own distinctive five-cylinder sound and punch. You can go fast easily and the cabin remains outstanding, despite its age. The four-wheel drive adds to the confidence in the wet conditions and you can see why it’s such a popular car.
Next up is the Cayman GTS, costing here over £76k, but for that you get a car so accomplished that you wonder how anything can beat it. Despite the engine being behind you, despite this being rear-wheel drive, despite conditions being atrocious, you can hurtle down a twisting road with extraordinary confidence.
