Speaking of which, it is interesting to note that the word marque has Scandinavian roots, though it comes to English through the French word marquer, which means “to brand.” This shouldn’t be considered too surprising because Scandinavian influence can be found in numerous European countries because of the vikings. In fact, the Normans who went on to conquer Anglo-Saxon England started out as vikings, though by the time of the Norman Conquest, enough time had passed that they had become a separate people with a separate culture of their own that had incorporated influences from a number of sources to create something new.
